Hydria Virtual Museum: Consortia as a participatory water management system for sustainable development in the Plain of Sybaris

The consortia system is still in use and managed by local populations. It involves local community in a democratic system of water management, protection of natural resources and, above all, management of common goods. After Italians decided, with a referendum in 2011, that water is a human right and a common good, consortia represent a way of protecting water from privatization and speculation.

The area hosts the important Archaeological Park of Sybaris.

A devastating flood in January 2013 caused extensive damage as the park was completely flooded.
