Present Status
The analysis of this case study allows us to illustrate the cotemporary problems of the foggaras (maintenance, cleaning, reduction of flow rates etc). Moreover it can be ascertained that the contribution of the support systems (boreholes, wells) using conventional energy, cannot provide the desired solutions due to the high cost of power consumption. The rational management of the heritage of the foggaras is quite a complex task.
As the data from the thirty (30) foggaras already powered by solar and wind energy attest (1998-2010), this is indeed the way forward. Hence the interest of renewable energies based on current technical standards should be presented to remediate the situation permanently, and return the socio-economic losses. Finally, a study should be made on the impacts of uncontrollable exploitation of water resources on the ecological balance.
